School closings announced for Wilmington area ahead of expected severe weather

Schools in New Hanover and Brunswick counties will be closed for students on Tuesday, Jan. 9 in anticipation of severe weather. Pender schools will operate virtually for students and staff on Tuesday.

Wilmington-area residents can expect gusty winds up to 55 mph and flash flooding. Coastal threats include high wind gusts, 15-foot seas, 6-foot surf and minor coastal flooding. Tornadoes are also possible.

New Hanover County Schools

New Hanover County schools will be closed for students on Tuesday. Staff should check their email for further instructions.

All afterschool activities will be canceled, and athletic events will be rescheduled. Normal operations are planned to resume on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Cape Fear Academy

The Lower School will dismiss at noon Tuesday.

The Middle School and Upper School will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

All afternoon practices and extracurricular activities are canceled.

Brunswick County Schools

Brunswick County Schools will be closed for students on Tuesday. It will be an optional workday for teachers and staff.

The Brunswick County Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been rescheduled to 6 p.m. Jan. 16 on the campus of the COAST.

All afterschool activities have been canceled.

Brunswick Community College

Brunswick Community College and all campus locations will be closed on Tuesday. Classes will move to remote classes where possible. This includes the Dinah E. Gore Sports & Aquatics Complex and the Odell Williamson Auditorium.

All campuses will reopen on a normal schedule on Wednesday.

Pender County Schools

Pender County Schools are operating virtually for students and staff on Tuesday.

All after school activities have been canceled on Tuesday, including the Board of Education meeting which has been rescheduled for Jan. 23.

More closings and cancellations

The Burgaw Board of Commissioners regular meeting scheduled for Jan. 9 has been rescheduled to Jan. 16 at 4:30 p.m. at the Burgaw Town Center.
