Severe weather with tornado risk possible this afternoon in the Peoria area

PEORIA — The Peoria area is under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. this evening.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to move into the area from Missouri after 3 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln. The storm could include large hail and damaging winds.

Cities currently under a tornado watch are Peoria, Pekin, Canton, Galesburg, Kewanee, Peru and Bloomington. The warning area ends just north Havana, which is under a severe thunderstorm watch along with communities further south.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue overnight, mainly before midnight. Wind gusts could be as high as 29 miles per hour. The chance of precipitation is 90%
