Severe weather warning: Tornado, thunderstorm, flash flooding and waterspouts

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning on Friday morning for east central Norfolk County and northern Plymouth County. At 9:45 a.m., the warning noted a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado over Holbrook near Randolph, moving east at 30 miles-per-hour.

The report also noted danger of quarter sized hail. “Flying debris will be dangers to those caught without shelter,” the report said. “Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur.”

Much of the South Shore is listed as impacted locations, including Weymouth, Braintree, Randolph, Marshfield, Hingham, Scituate, Pembroke, Rockland, Abington, Whitman, Hanover, Norwell and Cohasset.

The warning advises the following precautions: move to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, avoid windows, move to the closest substantial shelter if caught outside or in a mobile home or vehicle, and protect yourself from flying debris.

Other bulletins noted the possibility of flash floods and severe a thunderstorm. Due to heavy rain falling at one to two inches per 30 minutes, flash floods could impact locations including Plymouth, Weymouth, Braintree, Marshfield, Hingham, Scituate and Pembroke, the warning said.

The thunderstorm, which at 9:50 a.m. was over Braintree and moving northeast, could produce hazards such as 60 mile-per-hour winds and nickel size hail, the warning said. Impacted locations on the South Shore could include Quincy, Weymouth, Braintree, Milton, and Hingham.

The National Weather Service also issued a Special Marine Warning on Friday morning for coastal waters, effective until 11 a.m. The warning identified a severe thunderstorm capable of producing waterspouts 11 nautical miles west of Kingston and 14 nautical miles south of Weymouth.

“Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas,” the report reads. “Small crafts could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.”

In addition to waterspouts, the storm can produce wind gusts up to 40 knots and small hail, the warning said.

Impacted locations include coastal waters east of Boston Harbor, Minot Light, Ocean Bluff-Brant Rock, Gurnet Point, Manomet Point, Plymouth Light, Duxbury Pier Light, Quincy Harbor and Scituate Harbor.

The warning advices people caught on open water to stay below deck if possible and keep away from ungrounded metal objects due to lightning.
