Severe weather brings flooding, strong winds to the Wilmington area

As an intense storm moved up the Southeast coast Sunday, flooding and strong winds were reported in the Wilmington area.

Brunswick County Schools were operating on a two-hour delay Monday morning with Brunswick Community College delaying its opening until 10 a.m.

Here's a look at how the storm impacted the region.

Rainfall

Most parts of the Cape Fear region saw between 3 and 4 inches of rain, but higher amounts were reported in some areas.

Flooding

Heavy rainfall and storm surge resulted in flooding along numerous roadways, including the Southport riverfront, Water Street in downtown Wilmington, N.C. 133 in Belville/Leland, Canal Drive in Carolina Beach and roads near the Battleship North Carolina.

Wind

The highest winds of 67 mph were reported just offshore at the Frying Pan Shoals Buoy, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Meanwhile, 56 mph winds were reported in Southport with 47 mph winds reported in Wilmington.
