Sewer work to temporarily close I-35 north exit along 13th St. in Ames

Northbound interstate traffic will be impacted by sanitary sewer work this week.

The northbound on-ramp from East 13th Street to I-35 closed Monday, Dec. 11 for sanitary sewer extension work.

"The city is extending a new 18-inch sanitary sewer main along East 13th Street to 570th Avenue to serve future commercial and industrial development, as well as residential growth in the northeastern part of Ames," Hafiz Ibrahim, civil engineer with the city of Ames Public Works Department, said.

The city has contracted with On-Track Construction LLC to complete the work. The contractor is anticipating five days to complete the project, and Ibrahim said there are no existing complications to cause any delays.

Motorists heading north should follow the detour to Dayton Road north to the interstate access point at 190th Street.

Ibrahim said the project is not expected to cause traffic delays.

S. Duff Avenue remains under construction

Traffic in the southbound lane of Duff Avenue has been congested for several weeks due to two water main projects. A new water main is being installed on the east side of the street, while the west side is in the midst of sanitary sewer repairs.

"From 5th Street to 3rd Street we already had a new water main installed back in the 70s, but the old water main is still in place," Ibrahim said about work on Duff Avenue. "We are going to abandon the old water main from 3rd Street, and then we are starting a new water main from 2nd Street to Lincoln Way."

Construction work along South Duff Avenue is expected to several weeks to complete. A new water main is being installed on the east side of the street, while the west side is undergoing some sanitary sewer repair.

Meanwhile, a different contractor has been fixing pipe sections along Duff Avenue from 3rd Street to Lincoln Way while replacing all the sanitary sewer structures.

According to Ibrahim, the sanitary sewer project on South Duff Avenue will be completed this Friday. The water main project is anticipated to be finished on Dec. 22.
