Sewickley Academy students on Wednesday delivered supplies to the Good Samaritan Parish in Ambridge as part of the school's “Spirit of Community” Thanksgiving Food Drive, giving students a way to help local community members in need during the holiday season.

Throughout the collection, Sewickley Academy families collected more than 950 food items and raised $1,600 in donations for turkeys and other fresh items.

"The food will help during the Thanksgiving and winter holidays while the funds went toward purchasing 35 turkeys as well as grocery store gift cards to be distributed to families in need," said Jennifer Donovan, communications director at Sewickley Academy. "The students learned from the parish’s members that the contribution helps to feed more than 40 families and how appreciative their community was for such a hefty donation."

According to Donovan, these donations included 67 pounds of potatoes, 51 packages of instant mashed potatoes, 104 cans of green beans, 185 boxes of macaroni and cheese and 64 cans of pie filling. In addition to these popular items, there were also various amounts of corn, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, yams, marshmallows, cornbread mix, coffee and soup.
