There's a new place in town and it's already up and running.

The Sewing Box Quilt Shop opened its doors for business April 10 at its new location at 144 Eleventh Ave., Meyersdale, the former Clapper's Building Materials store. It used to be in the Georgian Place, Somerset.

April and Andy Hershberger have owned the Clapper's property for three years after the hardware store closed. They used the different buildings on the property for RV storage.

"We had been tossing around what we wanted to do with the property. We had to renovate the storefront for a tenant to move in," April Hershberger said. "Then Wendy (Airesman, the former owner of The Sewing Box Quilt Shop) found out she was losing her lease when Somerset Trust bought the Georgian Place property. She wasn't interested in buying and owning a place."

So April Hershberger decided that, with Wendy's retirement, she could take over the business.

"It all came about pretty darn quick," April Hershberger said in an interview at the time of the ownership change. "I'm passionate about quilting and had been working here for about six months. I was intrigued by the opportunity."

She said she felt customers had to search for the business at the Georgian Place, but in Meyersdale the quilt shop should do well.

March 18 was the final day for The Sewing Box Quilt Shop in the Somerset location. April 10 was a soft opening for the new location.

"We were very busy. Very busy," April Hershberger said. "It was great."

She said the store will continue planning events and offering a variety of services. It has fabrics, embroidery, gifts, machine sales, quilt kits, classes, events and more.

"We're filling out the calendar," she said. "We'll continue to add more classes and events. We're looking to have more designer fabrics. We'll still offer Janome machines."

She said alteration long arm services can be offered for the people making their quilt at home. It can then be put on the long arm machine and finished for them.

April Hershberger said the store has finished quilt options and gift options as well as gift cards.

An open house is set for April 26-29. The store will be open Mondays through Saturdays.

"I can't wait," April Hershberger said.
