Aimee Lou Wood is set to star in a new father-daughter comedy for the BBC.

The Sex Education actress will feature opposite The Walking Dead's David Morrissey in Daddy Issues, from Brassic writer Danielle Ward (via Variety).

Wood plays protagonist Gemma, a hard-partying young woman from Manchester who finds out she's pregnant after a brief encounter on an aeroplane during a holiday to Portugal.

Morrissey, known for his role as the Governor on AMC's zombie survival drama, portrays Gemma's dad Malcolm, who's forced to shake out his sadness over his failed marriage to show up for his daughter.

Malcolm leaves his divorcee pad to move in with Gemma, leading to all sorts of shenanigans as he faces challenges adjusting to single life.

"At its heart Daddy Issues is a classic odd couple comedy about two funny, deeply flawed characters, who just happen to be father and daughter," reads the official logline.

"Along the way there will be dating disasters and failed romances, toxic friendships and messy family dynamics, plus a dangerously sociopathic antenatal teacher."

Speaking about the series, Wood praised the script in particular.

"It had been a very long time since a script had made me laugh out loud," she said. "Danielle's did exactly that. Then when I heard David was involved, I was even more excited."

For her part, Ward revealed she had in mind both Wood and Morrissey for the roles and is grateful to have her "dream cast" on her show.

"I cannot wait for the world to meet Gemma and Malcolm, and I'm so grateful to the BBC for finally giving me my own series, 20 years after I lost the BBC New Comedy Awards," she said.

"Aimee and David were my dream casting from the get-go and who ever gets their dream cast? It's a total thrill to be working with such naturally funny and wildly talented actors."
