This SF neighborhood is the most expensive in the US

(KRON) — Home prices in the Bay Area have been notoriously high, noted as one of the most expensive areas in the country, but one San Francisco neighborhood stood out, according to a study done by American Home Shield. Coming in at $5,415 per square foot, South of Market is officially the most expensive neighborhood in the U.S.

SoMa–which is situated just south of Market Street in downtown San Francisco–has seen an influx of tech capital, which has brought in more luxury condos and expensive boutique shops and restaurants. It is home to billion-dollar tech businesses like Airbnb and Uber as well as some of the city’s museums and the Moscone Conference Center. It also contains sought-after residential sub-neighborhoods including Rincon Hill, South Beach and Yerba Buena.

The study found that homes in SoMa sell for an average price of about $5,415 per square foot, making it the most expensive neighborhood in the country.

The other most expensive markets in the U.S. are all located in California, with Northwest Auburn, in Placer County, and Old Town Carpenteria, in Santa Barbara County, rounding out the top three. Another Bay Area neighborhood, Stinson Beach, in Marin County, comes in at number seven.

On the other hand, the least expensive neighborhood in the U.S. is Homewood North in Allegheny County, Penn., with the average home sale price per square foot coming it at $29, followed by West Jackson in Hinds County, Miss., and Downtown Gary in Lake County, Ind.

American Home Shield used data from Homes.com and ranked the neighborhoods based on the average home sale price per square foot.
