SF organized retail theft suspect arrested on flight to Hawaii

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A suspect wanted in connection to an organized retail theft in San Francisco was arrested in Hawaii last week, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

The initial incident occurred on Jan. 29 at 12:33 p.m. SFPD officers from the Taraval station responded to a business located in Stonestown Galleria Mall on the 3200 block of 20th Avenue on a report of theft. Arriving on the scene, officers met store employees who said two women had entered the store and began taking items from display cases and putting them into bags.

An employee approached the suspects who fled, according to police. They were last seen getting into a vehicle in the mall parking lot.

Later that day, an investigator with the SFPD Burglary Unit, Organized Retail Crime Task Force was contacted regarding the theft. The investigator recognized one of the suspects, later identified as Denayah Duree, as a suspect who had previously been arrested in connection to organized retail crime.

As the investigation continued, the SFPD Fugitive Recovery Enforcement Team partnered with the US Marshalls Fugitive Recovery Task Force. Last Wednesday, according to police, it was determined that Duree had boarded a flight to Honolulu.

Later that day, investigators were notified that she had been located and arrested by US Marshalls for multiple outstanding warrants as she deplaned.

More charges are pending for Duree pending her extradition. She is wanted in connection to two organized retail crimes from May of 2023 at two luxury brand stores in downtown SF, police said.

“The long arm of the law extended to the beautiful islands of Hawaii this week,” said SFPD Chief Bill Scott. “I want to commend the diligent work of our officers who did extraordinary work on this case. I also want to thank the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Office of Correctional Safety and the United States Marshall Service for their assistance in this case.”

The investigation remains ongoing, despite an arrest being made, police said.
