SF Security Guard Who Stopped Assault on 75-Year-Old Chinese Woman Speaks Out

Samba Guisse, a security guard who stopped a 75-year-old Chinese woman from being severely injured near Market Street in San Francisco, has revealed some important details about moments before the attack.

The details: Guisse KPIX 5’s Betty Yu that the homeless assailant, Steven Jenkins, was attacked by two people before he punched Xiao Zhen Xie, 75, on March 17.


  • “One lady and one guy jump [Jenkins] in the corner outside the farmers market, but when they see me coming in my uniform, they run,” Guisse said. “I been in that area almost twelve years. They really know me — and they run. They’re not trying to mess with him, the guy coming to me, bleeding.”

  • “It’s just, she’s an old woman. I’m just trying to help,” he added.

  • Guisse offered to help the homeless man, but Jenkins headed for the farmers' market nearby. He then attacked Ngoc Pham, 83, and he punched Xie shortly after.




  • In a video recently released by the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, Guisse can be seen tackling Jenkins after the assault to stop him from hurting anyone else.


Praised for heroism: Guisse received plenty of praise from his community and from the San Francisco authorities.

  • In recognition of his heroic act, he received certificates from the SFPD and the Civic Center.

  • The staff of the farmers' market also expressed their appreciation for Guisse’s selflessness. They have set up a GoFundMe campaign to support him.



  • Guisse has lived in the Bay Area for 18 years and works seven days a week as a patrol officer for the Department of Public Works.

  • He also works part-time as a security guard at San Francisco Civic Center's Heart of the City Farmers' Market, sending money back home to his family in Senegal.
