Shadow and Bone star Ben Barnes has teased how his character The Darkling has changed in the second season.

The Netflix fantasy series is due to finally return for season 2 this week after nearly two years away, following the aftermath of the actor's character (aka General Aleksander Kirigan) getting dragged into the Fold at the end of season one.

Speaking to TVLine about where he's at this time around, Barnes explained that he feels "rejected and alone", especially after Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) turned down his offer to rule side-by-side.

“Whilst he is the evil, toxic, nasty presence that is seething all over season 2, he also feels betrayed and abandoned and rejected and alone – unloved at this point, even by his own mom,” he said.

“He’s justifying the way that he is being, even if it’s not possible for anybody else to. In the first season, he has all these different weapons in terms of his army, his charm, his skills in manipulation.

"In the second season, all that is out the window, and he’s just more full-on rage."

As well as Barnes and Li, season 2 of Shadow and Bone is set to bring back Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, Kit Young as Jesper Fahey, Archie Renaux as Malyen 'Mal' Oretsev, Danielle Galligan as Nina Zenik, Zoë Wanamaker as Baghra and Luke Pasqualino as David Kostyk.

The synopsis for the new episodes read: "Alina is determined to bring down the Shadow Fold and save Ravka from ruin. But this time, General Kirigan is backed by a terrifying new army of seemingly indestructible shadow monsters and fearsome new Grisha recruits.

"Even a few battle scars to the face can’t stop the wrath of this Darkling. To stand a fighting chance against him, Alina and Mal must rally their powerful new allies and begin a continent-spanning journey to find two mythical creatures that will amplify her powers."

Shadow and Bone is streaming on Netflix. Season 2 premieres on March 16.
