Shadowbrook Resort to close with impending sale and plans for independent living community

Aug. 23—A six-decades-old prominent Wyoming County resort, popular for wedding receptions, will close and be transformed into an active adult community.

The sale of Shadowbrook Resort off Route 6 in Tunkhannock Twp. to Waverly Twp. developer Richard Angelicola is nearing its conclusion and he plans to renovate the property into a 55-plus living community, said Brad Georgetti, director of human resources for Deer Park Lumber and Shadowbrook Resort.

The purchase price for the sale, expected to close Aug. 31, was not disclosed.

The 18-hole golf course will remain open to the public following the sale, said Angelicola who added renovations, set to be finished by March, will include a miniature golf course, golf simulator and ice cream stand open to the public, and a new outdoor pool, pickleball courts and a putting green open to residents of the complex and people with a golf club membership.

The Six West Restaurant & Bar also will close for renovations Aug. 31 and reopen to the public in the spring, Angelicola said.

The Greens at Shadowbrook Resort, a 100-unit apartment facility, will add to Angelicola's portfolio which includes the 130-unit Glenmaura Senior Living in Moosic, 155-unit Highland Park Senior Living in Wilkes-Barre Twp., and 72-unit Village at Greenbriar which straddles Dallas and Lehman townships.

Angelicola noted the facility will feature daily meals, a cocktail lounge, a fitness center, a hair salon and spa, and an opportunity for fishing on the property for its residents.

Georgetti added the plan is for Endless Mountains Hot Yoga to continue operations under the new ownership.

The natural beauty of the surroundings attracted Angelicola, 65, to the spot.

"The property is nestled into the Endless Mountains, which is absolutely stunning," he said.

Previously, Deer Park Lumber and Mountain Energy purchased the 176-acre Shadowbrook Inn & Resort from Peoples Neighborhood Bank for $4.29 million in June 2011. The facility includes 70 hotel rooms and a banquet center.

"The current ownership made a decision to sell Shadowbrook and take (it) in a different direction," Georgetti said. "We know Shadowbrook is a landmark institution. The name resonates in the hearts and minds of not only people of Wyoming County, but the surrounding counties as well."

Georgetti said staff members are helping clients who have events scheduled at the facility this fall find a solution.

"We're in the process of making contact with all events scheduled at Shadowbrook Resort and doing everything we can come to an amicable agreement — whether that's to hold the remaining events here or finding alternative locations," he said.

Gina Suydam, president of the Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce, welcomes the new development but also recognizes the significance of Shadowbrook's history.

"Housing is something we definitely need in the area," she said. "I like the idea that they're doing this inclusive community for 55-plus. We're very thankful to the Andrews family for keeping the resort open for so long. The community is certainly going to miss the events and weddings held there over the years."
