Shahzad hurts leg, Afghanistan beats Pakistan in CWC warmup

BRISTOL, England (AP) — Afghanistan's three-wicket win over Pakistan in a Cricket World Cup warmup game on Friday might have come at a cost.

Opening batsman and wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad retired hurt on 23 with an apparent injury to his left leg. He limped off at the County Ground in Bristol at the start of his team's successful run chase after Pakistan was dismissed for 262 in 47.5 overs.

Afghanistan reached the victory target with two balls to spare, Hashmatullah Shahidi hitting the winning runs to push the team to 263-7.

The latest loss for Pakistan added to a 4-0 series defeat to England. Its last warmup fixture before the World Cup is against Bangladesh on Sunday.

Afghanistan takes on England in its final warmup game on Monday.

In the other warmup match Friday, South Africa scored 338-7 — mainly thanks to 88 from Faf du Plessis and 65 by Hashim Amla — as it beat Sri Lanka by 87 runs.

The Sri Lankans were all out for 251 in 42.3 overs in their reply.

The World Cup starts Thursday, when host nation England takes on South Africa at The Oval.
