Shake Shack gives honey chicken sandwich a limited run, doubling down on poultry craze

Shake Shack (SHAK) on Monday unveiled a new chicken sandwich, the latest entry in an increasingly crowded yet wildly popular fast food category.

The Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich will make its debut at the chain this week, joining the 5-year old Chick'n Shack, but only for a limited time.

The honey-glazed crispy chicken breast is topped with habanero mayo sauce and lettuce, and nestled between a toasted potato bun. It's exclusive to the summer menu lineup, and will run from July 1st to October 4th.

In a statement, the company calls it "a spin" on the "beloved Chick'n Shack" and will retail for $7.19.

Alongside the launch of this limited-time sandwich, Shake Shack — known for its burgers — will also unveil Hot Honey Chicken Bites. It also re-created the hot honey flavoring as a spice that can be "dusted" onto its chicken bites and fries.

Shake Shack is also adding 'mock-tails' to its menu for the summer season including a Lime Agave Margarita, Piña Punch and Watermelon Mint Mojito. Customers can also look forward to two new shakes, a Cherry Pop Shake and a Triple Chocolate Chip Shake.

Back in April, Shake Shack CEO Randy Garutti hinted at this new menu item in an interview with Yahoo Finance LIVE, noting "we love expanding things in the right category."

He said the company was "incredibly proud of the chicken sandwich that we offer, which has been one of our great sellers for years," and planned to keep serving up limited-time offerings, like its Korean-inspired version that ran earlier this year.

Compared to a year ago, shares of Shake Shack are up 102%, while year-to-date share are up 24%.
