Shake Shack to open in former location of Mt. Fuji in Hasbrouck Heights

Shake Shack is headed to Hasbrouck Heights.

The borough's Planning Board has approved an application to bring the popular chain, known for its thin burgers, thick milkshakes and crispy fries, to Route 17 south in the location of the former Japanese steakhouse Mt. Fuji.

Mt. Fuji is set to be razed to make room for the 2,100-square-foot Shake Shack. The restaurant will include a two-lane drive-thru and a 990-square-foot patio with 40 seats.

“Things are changing due to the virus, and they’re figuring more people will want to be outside,” said Gino Tessaro, construction and zoning official for Hasbrouck Heights.

The opulent Mt. Fuji location in Hillburn, New York, is still open. But the Hasbrouck Heights location closed in 2020. The first Mt. Fuji was opened by current owner Nancy Fujita’s parents in 1969 in Fairview.

The Shake Shack abuts a residential zone, and, according to Tessaro, some residents at the Planning Board meeting were worried about the noise and trash the Shake Shack might produce. But Tessaro said the Shake Shack has plans for a 30-foot buffer with shrubbery and trees to help separate the restaurant from the homes.

There are other North Jersey Shake Shack locations in Parsippany, Wayne and Livingston and two in Paramus, including one in Westfield Garden State Plaza.
