Top Ukrainian football team Shakhtar Donetsk will play their home matches for the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League group stage at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany, Shakhtar’s press service reported on Aug. 18.

“First of all, we want to thank Warsaw and the Polish people for the support they gave us during the matches of the previous European season in Poland,” said Shakhtar Donetsk-Service LLC CEO Dmytro Kyrylenko.

“We considered the possibility of hosting the Champions League home games among several options for the new season, and we settled on Hamburg.”

“We are sure that the matches at the Volksparkstadion will be held at the highest level and will gather in the stands both local football fans and thousands of Ukrainians who are currently temporarily living in Germany and other European countries.”

Volksparkstadion, a stadium in the Bahrenfeld district in the west of Hamburg, is the home ground of HSV, currently playing in the Bundesliga’s second division.

The capacity of the stadium during international matches is 51,500 (during Bundesliga matches, the capacity is 57,000 due to standing sections).

During the previous European season, Shakhtar Donetsk played at Warsaw’s Stadion Wojska Polskiego.
