WORCESTER — The Shaking Crab, a Newton-based restaurant chain, is hoping to catch on in downtown Worcester.

The chain has notified the city License Commission that it is considering a restaurant at 544 Main St. The targeted storefront is across Main Street from the Hanover Theatre.

Members of the commission are scheduled to visit the site at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, before taking up unrelated agenda items.

The Shaking Crab bills itself as a Cajun seafood restaurant, its trademark being sauces, spices and fish mixed in a bag before serving.

The chain has about 24 locations, most outside Massachusetts.

"Our goal is to spread the love of buttery, garlicky, spicy shellfish throughout New England and beyond," the company writes on its website.

The Worcester building being eyed by the company is owned by the Menkiti Group, a development company that has bought a handful of downtown properties in recent years. The company paid $2.85 million for the building in 2018.
