JACKSON TWP. — Shale Brewing Co. has permanently closed.

In an announcement posted Friday to Facebook, the brewery thanked staff, customers and friends for their support.

"We have greatly enjoyed being a part of the fabric of this community and all the good that came out of it," the post said.

Owner Jeff Joliat said the brewery closed for "three factors: Decrease in business, increase in costs and lack of staff."

Joliat said the business has been in talks to sell, and those talks will continue. They are "continuing to entertain offers," with five parties at various phases.

He was happy to report that the sister company Shale Craft Coffee, which is a separate business, is "booming and will continue to operate."

The Facebook post urged followers to continue to support local business, specifically local breweries, and the North Canton Cares Food Pantry, as well as other causes in the area.

The post garnered about 400 reactions, many of which were sadness and shock. Comments flowed in stating how people loved the brewery and would miss it, and how people were shocked by the news.

Shale Brewing’s history

Shale Brewing  — which took its name from the oil and gas industry — opened in a former foundry in downtown Canton and flew under the radar until it relocated to the 7253 Whipple Ave. location, former home to Scenic Brewing Co., in 2018. This allowed Shale to have a full brewery operation and open a taproom.

Shale expanded to open a second location in Oakwood Square in 2020. This variation was Shale Craft Beer + Barbecue, a full-service Texas-style barbecue joint. Next door, they launched Shale Craft Coffee.

Shale Craft Beer + Barbecue closed its doors on Dec. 30, 2021. Shale Craft Coffee closed its doors at Oakwood Square the same month and relocated to 1160 S. Main St. in North Canton, opening April 27, 2022.

Stark County is home to 11 craft breweries, with others such as The Brew Kettle at the Hall of Fame Village in Canton and New Berlin Brewing in North Canton in the works.
