Shamokin woman sentenced to 4-10 years in state prison

Apr. 22—SUNBURY — A Shamokin woman accused of several charges, including aggravated harassment by a prisoner and simple assault, will spend 4-10 years in state prison after the 32-year-old was sentenced in Northumberland County Court on Monday.

Stormie Birster, appeared with her public defender, John Broda, in front of Judge Michael Toomey on Monday for her sentencing.

Birster, who was credited with 504 days of being incarcerated, received the sentence and said she was stunned by the results.

Birster told Toomey she thought she was going to spend only two years in prison and was confused.

Last year, Birster was accused of simple assault charges as well as aggravated harassment by a prisoner after she allegedly spit on a probation officer.

The commonwealth was represented by First Assistant District Attorney Peter Kay. Kay said he wanted Birster to also participate in state treatment court.

Toomey explained to Birster the options if she didn't agree with the sentencing, and Birster listened and thanked the judge.
