Shane Beamer gives Marshawn Lloyd injury update after South Carolina football RB practices

COLUMBIA — South Carolina football may be without star running back Marshawn Lloyd again this week in its SEC East matchup against Florida.

Lloyd did not travel for last week's game against Vanderbilt after suffering a quad contusion early in South Carolina's loss to Missouri.

South Carolina coach Frank Beamer said Lloyd practiced Thursday, but said there is no decision on whether he will be available when the Gamecocks (6-3, 3-3 SEC) take on the Gators (5-4, 2-4) in Gainesville on Saturday (4 p.m., SEC Network).

The sophomore leads South Carolina in scoring with 11 touchdowns, 556 rushing yards and 173 receiving yards. In his limited appearance against Missouri, he recorded 30 of the Gamecocks' 32 rushing yards.

Still, the offense managed to put together a solid rushing performance without him against Vanderbilt. Tight end Jaheim Bell lined up at running back most of the game and finished with 58 yards on 16 carries. Wake Forest transfer Christian Beal-Smith scored the team's lone rushing touchdown on a 52-yard carry.

Beamer confirmed defensive back David Spaulding is out for the rest of the year after undergoing surgery this week for a lower leg injury, and defensive back B.J. Gibson will also miss the game against Florida with a hamstring injury. The South Carolina secondary has been banged up most of the year and will again be lacking depth with those absences.

Senior nickelback Cam Smith was dealing with an illness earlier this week and safety Devonni Reed is recently recovered from a knee injury. Beamer said both are expected to play against the Gators.

South Carolina travels to "The Swamp" looking for its first road win against Florida since 2014. The Gamecocks have only won twice in Gainesville in the history of their matchup with Florida, and the Gators lead the all-time series 29-10-3.
