Shane Beamer isn’t reinventing the wheel, but South Carolina’s June recruiting plan might take a bit of a different shape this summer.

Beamer told reporters during a booster event at Florence Country Club on Monday that South Carolina is adding an additional official visit weekend in June and cutting down on hosting official visits during the week.

“We’ve had zero luck with that,” Beamer said of the midweek official visits. “Some kids have wanted to and we’ve flat out told them, ‘Sorry, we’re not going to bring you in midweek.’ Every situation is different but we just haven’t had a lot of success with that. So, to me, you’re better off coming in on an official visit weekend.”

The move should help, in part, with the NCAA’s recent ruling that will allow prospects an unlimited number of official visits. Passed last month, recruits are no longer limited to just five official visits during the entirety of their recruiting process.

Beamer has been vocally against the new rule since its passage, noting most prospects don’t need more than the five visits they were previously allotted to decide on what school they might want to play for.

“I’m not a fan of the unlimited official visits,” Beamer said during a booster event in Aiken earlier this month. “I mean, I think by the time the official visits come around, guys, prospects have got it narrowed down. They know the three, four, or five schools (they’re interested in). We signed guys who took one official visit, or two official visits.”

“It gets tiresome, I think, for the players, taking official visits. And then if you’re taking 10, you’re missing days of school at some point and things like that, as well. So I’m not a fan of that. That one kind of came out of nowhere, there wasn’t a lot of discussion that we had as coaches or administrators about that one.”

South Carolina has hit big on its June recruiting periods in recent years. June 2021 was particularly fruitful for Beamer and his staff, netting 10 prospects that month — including nine players between June 20 and June 31.

Beamer’s staff has continued its work on the recruiting trail with the 2024 class, which currently ranks No. 9 nationally, per the 247Sports Composite. That group is headlined by four-star, top 100 offensive tackles Kam Pringle (No. 44 overall) and Josiah Thompson (No. 71 overall).

“As soon as things are over you take notes on, ‘OK, what’re the things we liked about the schedule in June? How can we be better? What can we do different?’ “ Beamer said Monday. “And there’s some things that we looked back at last summer and felt like we would be better doing it this way in 2023.”
