'A shared experience of music': Saturdays in the Park concerts return in Quincy

QUINCY – After a successful run in 2021, bringing almost 400 people to Safford Park, the Saturdays in the Park concerts will return Aug. 6.

"It attracted residents from across the city who are interested in music and being part of the community. It went really well, so we decided to run it for a third year," said Walter Hubley, co-founder of the Wollaston Hill Neighborhood Association.

Stretching through all four Saturdays in August, the series will include two musical acts for each day, performing from 3 to 8 p.m.

Hubley said he is excited about the first act, The Sprints, on Aug. 6. The Sprints are local teenagers who performed at the association's PorchFest event.

"We're very excited to have them back. They just keep getting better and better," Walter Hubley said.

He said he expects The Tokyo Tramps, slotted as the second act Aug. 6, will bring their strong stage presence and audience engagement. The Gypsy Moths will perform on Aug. 20; its members hail from Quincy. The band recently hit No. 2 on Connecticut's alt-rock radio charts.

Walter Hubley and Kathy Hubley, a Quincy school committee member and co-founder of the association, combined their passions for music and community building to start running Saturdays in the Park.

"It's an opportunity for neighbors and visitors to come together and get to know each other through a shared experience of music," Walter Hubley said.

The 3rd Annual Quincy All-Neighborhood Corn Hole Tournament will add a touch of friendly competition to the festivities Aug. 27. Walter Hubley said people from across Quincy, not just Wollaston Hill, are encouraged to compete in the tournament.

Craig's Cafe will sell traditional cookout food, including burgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken sandwiches. There will also be local craft beer, wine, seltzer and nonalcoholic options.

The concerts are free. There is a $20 entrance fee for teams competing in the corn hole tournament. The proceeds are used to buy the winners' trophies.
