Sharing a Netflix password now comes with a cost. Here’s how much you have to pay
After announcing the move last April, Netflix is finally cracking down on password sharing in the U.S.
The company said last year that Netflix passwords were being shared with more than 100 million households around the world, CNN reported.
On Tuesday, the streaming service sent an email to users stating that Netflix accounts are only allowed to be shared within a single household.
Account holders can now only share Netflix with people outside of their households by transferring their profiles to a new membership that they pay for, or by buying an extra member on their accounts for $7.99 per month more.
How to transfer a Netflix profile
To transfer a profile, users must turn on profile transfers. You can turn on profile transfers by signing into your Netflix account, visiting your account page, selecting “turn on profile transfers” from the settings menu and selecting “allow.”
Netflix will send you a confirmation email with the subject “Account update: Profile transfers will be available soon.” Once you receive the email, you should open it and select “Enable Instantly.”
After turning on profile transfers, you can transfer a profile by:
Sign into your Netflix account that has the profile you want to start a new account with on a web browser.
Visit the account page.
Choose the profile you want to start a new account with in the “Profiles and Parental Controls” section.
Select the “Transfer” link in the “Transfer Profile” section.
Enter the email address and password you want to use for the new account.
Follow the prompts on the screen to finish setting up your account.
How to add another member to your Netflix account
Netflix members who have a “Standard” or “Premium” account can add extra members by buying extra member slots. Those with standard plans can add one extra member, and premium subscribers can add up to two.
If you see “To keep sharing with someone who doesn’t live with you, please add an extra member,” after selecting your profile, you can follow these steps to add an extra member:
Select “Learn more.”
Choose “Start Extra Member.”
After seeing “One more step: Who is your extra member,” select “Next.”
Enter the phone number of the extra member you are inviting and select “Send.” The person you are inviting will receive a text message invitation to join Netflix.
The extra member can follow the invitation link to create a new account.
