Shark attacks a snorkeler in the Florida Keys, sheriff’s office says

An Atlanta resident’s encounter with a bull shark in the Keys resulted in a shoulder injury severe enough for airlifting to Ryder Trauma Center, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Andrew Eddy, 30, was doing some Sunday morning snorkeling with family at Sombrero Key Lighthouse near Marathon.

“Witnesses stated Eddy was attacked almost immediately after entering the water,” MCSO said.

They estimated the shark’s length at 8 to 10 feet. Boaters who had been in the area earlier told deputies there was a bull shark in the area. The Keys sheriff’s office said nobody was fishing or putting chum in the water near where Eddy’s group was snorkeling.

Eddy was taken back to Sombrero Beach, where Marathon Fire Rescue and MCSO tended to him before being an air ambulance took him to Ryder Trauma at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

The shoulder injury was termed “severe.” There wasn’t an update on Eddy’s condition as of 2 p.m. Sunday.
