Shark bites, steals catch from Winter Springs fisherman

A Seminole County man fishing at Canaveral National Seashore Tuesday was bitten on the hand by a shark trying to eat a fish he had just caught, according to Volusia County Beach Safety spokesman Capt. A.J. Miller.

The 54-year-old Winter Springs man was surf fishing and releasing a catch when the 4- to 5-foot shark lunged for the fish, biting his right hand in the process, Miller said.

The shark swam away, and the man was treated by Beach Safety staff. He drove himself to a local hospital for treatment, Miller said.

Volusia County Beach Safety officials did not report any shark bites over the long weekend, despite large Labor Day crowds.
