Sharks attack dolphin in bloodstained waters off Jersey Shore beach

It was gore on the Jersey Shore.

Sharks slaughtered a bleeding dolphin Thursday morning as beachgoers on Long Beach Island watched the big fish dig into breakfast, NJ Advance Media reported.

A video shows a pool of red in the wavy blue water. Splashes surge from the cresting waves, and contorted fins flop about — apparently caused by the aquatic struggle between the animals.

Robert Schoelkopf, executive director Marine Mammal Stranding Center of Brigantine, said the dolphin was taken down around 7 a.m. on Thursday at Brant Beach, and lifeguards were told to order swimmers out of the water, according to Advance Media.

“If you’re standing next to a dolphin while this is going on, you’re going to be in danger,” Schoelkopf told the news outlet. “It’s just food to a shark.”

He said Jersey Shore shark attacks on wounded animals aren’t unheard of, but they’re almost never captured on video.

Brant Beach sits about 100 miles down the shore from New York City.
