Sharon residents alerted to recent coyote sightings

Police in Sharon have issued an alert to residents after some recent run-ins with coyotes.

The department says there have been “many reports” of coyote sightings over the past few weeks and officers are urging people to take caution.

“Wildlife are attracted to areas for many reasons, but the most likely reason is food,” according to a statement from Sharon Police. “Help keep wildlife wild by not feeding them. Whether directly or indirectly, food will attract unwanted guests to our backyards and public spaces. Remove bird feeders, do not feed pets outdoors, and secure trash containers.”

Police also suggested that a good way to prevent altercations between pets and coyotes is to keep cats indoors and dogs leashed and supervised while outdoors.

“Effective hazing noises that can deter coyotes include shouting authoritatively, making loud and startling banging noises, and sounding sirens and alarms.” said police in their alert.
