Sharpie and more pets up for adoption in Phoenix-area shelters this week

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Sharpie: The perfect mix of chill and wiggly

One of almost 1,000 pets rescued through the Arizona Humane Society’s Project Reachout Program each year, Sharpie (along with her adorable puppies) made her way down to Phoenix all the way from the Navajo Nation earlier this month. This program allows AHS to bring in at-risk pets from partner shelters in the Valley and throughout Arizona when the shelter has space and/or bring in pets that are in need of medical care that other shelters simply cannot provide.

With one of the squishiest faces and softest demeanors, this 2-year-old Sharpei-Labrador retriever mix is sure to leave a permanent mark on the hearts of all who know her. After being such a great mama to her babies, it is Sharpie’s turn to find a family that will treat her like the big baby that she is.

Sharpie is a true love bug through and through. She is a very smart girl who walks amazingly on a leash, rides well in a car and loves to be a lap dog even though she is 45 pounds.

How to adopt: Interested adopters can meet Sharpie at the Arizona Humane Society’s South Mountain location. Her adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Weldon: A shy guy who warms up quickly

Two-year-old Weldon is enjoying the good life now and has come a long way from when he was dumped at Walmart in the middle of summer. Thankfully he was picked up and taken home by a kind soul, who eventually got him into Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue to be adopted.

A bit shy at first, he quickly warms up and shows his sweet side. He enjoys being brushed and doesn’t mind being picked up. He has a silky black coat with just a few touches of white.

How to adopt: Weldon would love to welcome you at 11129 Michigan Ave., Youngtown. Call 623-876-8778 after 10 a.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. These are also adoption days. Other locations are the shelter at 10807 N. 96th Ave., Peoria; 623-773-2246, same hours and days; Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Road; and Lake Pleasant Towne Center PetSmart, 25372 Lake Pleasant Pkwy., Peoria.

Sardine: Former stray is quite a catch

This Sardine weighs in at almost 12 pounds of striped cuteness. The 3-year-old domestic shorthair brown tabby was a stray prior to being rescued by the Arizona Humane Society.

Earlier this month, Sardine was found by an AHS emergency animal medical technician after a good Samaritan was concerned he was losing weight. Upon examination, the handsome kitty was found to have an upper respiratory infection with nasal discharge, a wound on his head, and ear mites. Later, it was also determined that Sardine has a sensitive stomach, which is easily calmed by a special food.

Sardine could not be given a second chance at a great life without the support of the community. From good Samaritans who look out for stray pets to donors whose generous gifts allow the shelter to operate, adopters that welcome furry family members into their homes, volunteers donating hundreds of thousands of hours to pets in AHS’ care and Foster Heroes who offer pets a temporary reprieve from the shelter … thousands of lives are saved because of them all.

How to adopt: Interested adopters can meet sophisticated Sharpie at the Arizona Humane Society’s South Mountain location. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.
