Sharpsburg market in heart of Civil War battle sites celebrates 30 year anniversary

SHARPSBURG, Md. (DC News Now) — If you happen to be a visitor to the Civil War battlefield sites in Sharpsburg, there is a good chance you will stop into the Battle View Market.

The mom-and-pop shop on Route 65 celebrated three decades as the local hangout on Thursday. The family-run carryout and convenience store was packed for the special occasion.

The prices reflected the celebration, too. For one day, the menu prices were marked down to where they were when the business first opened. A cold-cut hoagie sub of ham, turkey, roast beef and cheese on a freshly baked 12-inch sub roll with all the trimmings was under $5.

Many in the town of Sharpsburg said that the Battle View Market is a fixture in the area. Owner Peggy Showe summed it up.

“We pride ourselves on our local, country feel, being family-oriented,” said Showe. “We really like our community. I have a lot of special employees and a lot of good customers.”

Showe said that the plan is for her daughter to eventually take over the business.

For years, customer Steve Taylor made a habit of crossing state lines from his native West Virginia for the Battle View Market after bagging his buck.

“We used to go over here hunting, and I would come over and get something to eat in the Battle View just about every day,” said Taylor.

Another customer, Jeremy Horner, said he loves to bike the country roads around Sharpsburg and makes the Battle View a regular stop.

“It’s just a fun little shop, just a good downhome spot,” said Horner.

Washington County Commissioner Jeff Cline also came to the market for the special occasion. He lives in Williamsport but makes regular visits to the Battle View.

“Your neighbors, your friends all gather here. It may just be for a quick bite or stocking up on groceries,” said Cline.
