Shasta County clerk's office moves to Court St., elections office stays on Market St.

Shasta County residents will need to report to a new location for county clerk's services, starting in mid-August.

The Shasta County Clerk and Elections office will open a new location in downtown Redding on Aug. 14, the clerk's office reported on Friday.

Staff at the new office will be responsible for all clerk services until both offices move to a single larger location, according to Shasta County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Cathy Darling Allen.

Some election services will be available at the new office and "all the elections office staff will have a desk there," Darling Allen said. But the old office, at 1643 Market St., "will continue to function as the primary location for all election services" including ballot sorting, counting and tabulation, she said.

The new office ― located in the county's administration building at 1450 Court St. ― will house retail clerk and clerk administration offices, she said. Among its duties, the clerk's office issues marriage licenses and fictitious business name statements and accepts passport applications.

Both offices will be closed for clerk services on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11 while staff move to the new Count Street location, while elections services will be open at the old office as usual, she said.

Staff may not remain in the new Court Street office for very long.

"We're hoping this is a two-to-five-year temporary home until we find a permanent new location," Darling Allen said.

She's not sure when or where both offices will move, but it must be to a space large enough to securely house the growing departments: Clerk and elections services, she said.

The timeline also depends in part on commercial real estate prices, Darling Allen said.

For now, she said she doesn't want to pull elections services out of the Market Street office on the Redding Promenade. "People have been coming to the same location for over 50 years. We don't want to confuse" them, Darling Allen said.

Another reason to keep the old elections office open is candidate filing for the Gateway School District and Shasta Fire District boards ends on Aug. 11, the second moving day, Darling Allen said. People can register as candidates at the Market Street office on Aug. 10 and 11.

The clerk's office hours will be the same at the Court Street location, Darling Allen said: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

People can reach either office by phone at 530-225-5730 or email at elections@co.shasta.ca.us. Address print mail to P.O. Box 990880, Redding, California 96099.
