Shasta County needs to hire a second interim executive officer by end of January

With a new executive officer not expected to be hired before the end of the month, Shasta County will start to look for its second acting executive officer.

That’s because current interim CEO Patrick Minturn’s contract ends Jan. 31, and he told the Record Searchlight that he does not plan to work past that date.

"I am already eight moths past my preferred retirement date," Minturn said.

Minturn expects recruitment for the new CEO to close around Jan. 20 and then that will be followed by the interview process, background checks and a decision by the Board of Supervisors.

“Depending on the circumstances, we are looking at another month with another acting CEO,” Minturn said.

Minturn emphasized that the hiring process for a new CEO is going as planned, and he doesn’t foresee any delays moving forward.

“I have enjoyed my time as acting CEO. I’ve enjoyed working with all the board members,” said Minturn, adding that he has worked with 18 supervisors since he became county public works director in 2001.

Minturn retired as public works director last spring and became acting CEO after Matt Pontes resigned. Minturn is making $24,338 a month as interim CEO.

Minturn expects a recommendation for a new acting CEO to come before supervisors on Jan. 24.

“There are some qualified folks who can step in, as I did,” Minturn said.

Meanwhile, Shasta County is asking for the public’s help with picking its new executive officer.

The county is partnering with WBCP Inc. on the recruitment, county spokesperson David Maung said in a news release.

“Shasta County would like to receive community input regarding desirable qualities and characteristics to look for in the next CEO. Residents are encouraged to take the survey found at www.shastacounty.gov and www.surveymonkey.com/r/7KYKCGK to submit their input, now through January 20, 2023,” the release said.

WBCP is an executive recruitment firm that has worked with several cities and counties in California, according to its website. The cities of Redding and Dunsmuir are among its past clients. Other cities include Arcata, Davis, Fremont, Oakland, Pasadena and Ventura.

The company also has worked with Los Angeles, Marin, Napa, San Bernardino and Santa Barbara counties.
