Shauna Chavez sworn in as Coldwater's new city clerk

COLDWATER — In a move planned for the past five years, Shauna Chavez was sworn in Monday, Dec. 12, as Coldwater's new city clerk.

Chavez replaces Susan Heath, who will semi-retire and continue working for the city. Heath came to Coldwater as the clerk 11 years ago from the east side of the state, where she was a municipal clerk for 15 years.

Chavez started six years ago as an administrative assistant in the Neighborhood Services Department. She took over as the deputy clerk a year later in a planned transition for Heath’s retirement. Her first official duty was to take minutes at Monday night’s council meeting.

Chavez grew up in Coldwater. She is now raising her own family within city limits. She believes that “improvement comes with the willingness to deconstruct, reconstruct and turn things around."

“It's been a good run, I've enjoyed serving the residents of Coldwater, and I'm now looking forward to retirement,” Heath said.

The former clerk worked for the past several months to upgrade records for the city’s Oak Grove Cemetery. She will continue to do so as the cemetery administrator.

Chavez worked with Heath on multiple elections, the last being the August primary.

“I have confidence in her ability,” Heath said about Chavez's ability to conduct future election.

Chavez oversaw the Nov. 8 general election without issues.

Chavez served multiple city boards and commissions over the past several years as she trained to take over as clerk.
