Shaw named new UC Health president

Cory Shaw, who spent 30 years at Nebraska Medicine, most recently serving as the organization's executive vice president, will become UC Health's new president and chief executive officer, the health agency announced Tuesday.

His tenure will begin in the new year on Jan. 9.

Shaw, who oversaw all healthcare operations of the $2.2 billion academic health system in Nebraska, takes over for Dr. Richard Lofgren who departed Cincinnati for Oklahoma's OU Health in March.

UC Health – which operates the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, West Chester Hospital, Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care, Lindner Center of Hope and more than 30 outpatient service locations – is one of the 10 largest employers in the Cincinnati region with more than 12,000 workers.

UCMC in Corryville is in the midst of a $221 million expansion, with a project that will double the size of its emergency department, as well as constructing new operating rooms and two new parking garages.

After the departure of Lofgren, who played a major role in the region's response to COVID-19, UC Health's board conducted a national search for the organization's next president. Shaw was "unanimously selected as the right candidate" for the job, said Neville Pinto, president of the University of Cincinnati. UC Health is a separate nonprofit affiliated with UC.

“His background and deep expertise will be key in developing UC Health’s strategic vision and our capacity to advance clinical care, research, and education," Pinto added in a statement.

Shaw earned a bachelor of arts degree in communication from the University of Nebraska and a master of arts degree in health care administration from the University of Missouri. He has served on many academic, professional, industry, and community boards, according to a news release, and has served in many leadership roles in the field of medicine.

“Cory brings passion, broad healthcare acumen, and an unwavering commitment to the purpose of academic medicine and we couldn’t be more pleased to welcome him as our next president and CEO at UC Health,” added Thomas Cassady, chairman of the UC Health board of directors. "Based on Cory’s experience, he will enhance our unique position as Greater Cincinnati’s only adult academic health system and aspirations for future growth.”

UC Health's interim president Rick Hinds, who is also the organization's executive vice president and chief financial officer, will continue to serve as CEO until Shaw's arrival.

“This is an exciting time to join UC Health which is recognized as essential to the vibrancy of Cincinnati, the tri-state area, and the state of Ohio,” Shaw said, who was not immediately available for an interview, in the release. “I am committed to working with employees, clinicians, faculty, University and College of Medicine leadership, as well as community stakeholders to strengthen connections and partnerships with healthcare organizations and the business community. I look forward to being part of this legacy and to help shape the future and next chapter for UC Health.”
