Musicians Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes met in 2014.
Mendes and Cabello's romantic relationship officially began on July 4, 2019.
The pair recently announced they were going back to being just friends after two years of dating.
Musicians Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes first met in 2014. After years of friendship, the two began dating in July 2019.
From sweet social-media interactions to saucy duets, here's a timeline of Cabello and Mendes' relationship:
2014: The two met when they were both opening acts for Austin Mahone's Live On Tour
During this tour, Shawn Mendes and Fifth Harmony (the band Cabello was part of until she left in December 2016) opened up for the artist Austin Mahone.
In a 2019 interview with V magazine, Cabello recalled her first impression of Mendes when they met on the Mahone tour, saying, "I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar."
Mendes remembered, "You were the only person that talked to me. Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me."
March 2015: Mendes fueled some dating reports when he played a radio game
During a game of "Lips, Wife, Leave It!" on Capital FM, Mendes sparked reports that he might like Cabello as more than a pal.
The interviewer asked him to choose who he'd marry out of Camila Cabello, Jade Thirlwall (of the band Little Mix), and actress Chloë Grace Moretz.
"Because I know Camila well, I'd probably wife Camila," he told the interviewer. Although it was just part of a game, his answer had some fans wondering if something was going on between him and Cabello.
November 2015: They released their first song together
In November 2015, the two released their first song together, "I Know What You Did Last Summer."
They created the song somewhat spontaneously after they encountered each other again backstage during Taylor Swift's 1989 tour — Mendes was the opening act and Cabello was a special guest.
Cabello told Rolling Stone in 2015, "[Backstage on this tour] was the first time we had ever really spent more than a few minutes talking to each other."
"We were just backstage hanging out, I pulled out my guitar and we were just messing around, not really thinking about writing a song," Mendes told the publication.
Cabello added, "I am very lucky that we wrote the song because I also got a really good friendship out of that."
November 2015: They denied reports that they were dating during a TV interview
Reports that the two were dating blew up after the song was released. Mendes and Cabello denied them during a 2015 interview on "The Late Late Show With James Corden."
And when Corden asked if he and Cabello ever made out, Mendes joked, "Every time I try to make a move, she just, like, swerves me off."
Cabello also joked, "He friendzones me, he calls me kid!" They went on to say they were joking and they insisted that they had never made out and that they were definitely not dating.
October 2016: Again, Mendes responded to reports about him and Cabello dating
Nearly a year after their single came out, the two were still shutting down reports that they were dating.
Mendes told People magazine that he and Cabello are just "really close friends."
He said, "She is one of those people who is just very easy to connect with and still, to this day, is one of my greatest friends. You find that instant connection with people, and she's one of them."
May 2017: Cabello released a single and Mendes shared his support for her on Twitter
When Cabello dropped her single "Crying in the Club," Mendes tweeted out the video, writing, "speechless… goosebumps all over. You're incredible."
Cabello replied, "I love you SO much and I miss you even more than I love you thank you for being such an amazing friend."
December 2017: Mendes called Cabello 'girlfriend material' but reaffirmed that the two are 'just really good friends'
Dating reports surfaced once again after Mendes called Cabello "girlfriend material" in an interview.
He told The New Paper, "She has the best sense of humor and she's probably — other than me — the most determined person I've ever met … the next guy that finds her should wife her up." He added, "We're just really good friends but I love her. She's one of my best friends."
April 2018: Mendes called Cabello his 'favorite person in the world'
In an interview with Beats-1 personality Zane Lowe, Mendes called Cabello his "favorite person in the whole world."
He added, "I don't think you'll ever meet somebody who can feel emotion like her, in all aspects. She can feel hurt like no other, but she can feel love like no other."
April 2018: Mendes said that Cabello is the first person who listens to all of his singles
In an interview with 103.5 KTU, Mendes said that he has Cabello listen to all of his singles first, even before his family. He explained, "I treasure her opinion."

During the performance, the two almost kissed a few times, causing some passionate audience members to yell for them to lock lips.
November 2019: Cabello spoke about their awkward start in an interview with Rolling Stone
Cabello told the magazine that she knew she wanted to be with Mendes back in 2015 when they were working on "I Know What You Did Last Summer," but that neither of them were ready to admit it.
"I really bonded with him as more than a friend. I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don't think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren't together," she explained.
January 2020: The couple went all out for karaoke at a Grammys after-party
Mendes and Cabello surprised fans when they didn't walk the red carpet together at the Grammys, but they weren't apart for too long.
After the show, they met up with musician Lewis Capaldi for some karaoke and the trio sang a passionate rendition of One Direction's "Steal My Girl."
October 2020: Mendes shared that he'd spent the past few months with Cabello and her family in Miami
Reports the two had broken up circulated over the summer, but Mendes and Cabello put them to rest in a few recent interviews detailing what they've been doing amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Mendes went on the podcast "Smallzy's Celebrity Small Talk" at the beginning of October and shared that he spent three months quarantining with Cabello and her family in Miami.
"I mean, to be completely honest, it was my first time spending time with my girlfriend and her family in their house in Miami," he said. "I was there for like three months so I got really like, I was doing laundry, well I was barely doing laundry. I was trying to do laundry. I was learning how to cook. It was nice, man, it was really nice."
He also said that they watched the entire "Harry Potter" film series and Netflix's "Stranger Things" three times through each.
Later that month, Mendes released a new single inspired by their relationship
Cabello showed her support for her boyfriend on Instagram after he released his new single, "Wonder," in the lead-up to his upcoming album of the same name.
Part of her caption read, "He's crafted this album with every last bit of his soul, his spirit, and his essence with the purest of intentions. My love, I'm so proud of the person you are and I'm so excited for people to see and hear your heart."
That same month, Mendes told Radio.com that the lyrics of "Wonder" were inspired by the way his relationship with Cabello has challenged him emotionally.
"I thought that I was a pretty open, emotional, guy until I started being in a relationship with someone that I really, truly love and, realizing that 'oh no, I really have this big ego, and I don't want to show her that I'm hurting and I don't want to show her that that offended me, and like I want to be the man, and I want to be strong in this relationship,'" he said.
He continued, "The real strength does lie inside of being emotional and being vulnerable."
October 2020: The trailer for Mendes' documentary showed him saying all of his songs are about Cabello
In the trailer for Mendes' Netflix documentary "In Wonder," the singer says "everything" is about Cabello.
"My song comes on the radio or something, and I'm like, 'Everything is about you, they've always been about you.' She goes, 'What do you mean?' I'm like, 'They're all about you. Like, every song I've ever wrote,'" Mendes said at the end of the trailer.
December 2020: Mendes revealed that their relationship became romantic after a few text messages
"I think I was just bugging her along for a long time about how I felt about her," he said in an interview with Sirius XM.
He continued, "I think I was in Calgary or Edmonton, Canada, and I was at dinner with two of my friends and she texted me basically being like, 'OK, fine. I like you. OK, fine. This is a thing.' And I have the text, I have this, I screenshotted the text messages."
November 2021: The two announced they were back to being just friends
On November 15, the pair posted matching Instagram stories with white text on a black background.
"Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever," the note, signed Camila and Shawn, read.
The note also says the two will "continue to be best friends" and that they have appreciated everyone's support.
