Shawn Mendes Gives Fan Sweet Advice on Telling Her Strict Parents She's Bisexual

Shawn Mendes' fan Q+As have provided tons of fun and hilarious moments for the singer, but one fan's question created a sweet moment between the singer and his LGBTQ+ fans.

Lya, a lucky fan who got the chance to go to his Oakland Q+A session last week, asked him to create a video for her announcing to her parents that she was bisexual. She hoped that since the video was coming from him, that it would help.

Shawn declined the request, but ended up sharing some pretty good advice for the fan about what she can do and why he said no.

"This is what I want to tell you, your parents are your parents. They're going to love you no matter what you say, no matter how you say it, no matter how you look when you say it, any time of the day," Shawn said. "Nothing I say is going to mean anything that is even close to what you saying it means to them. Okay? You're their world. I cannot possibly come close to the amount of joy and happiness that they're going to feel when they find out that you're telling them your truth and your honesty."

"I would [make the video] if I thought that it was a better thing to do, but I know in my heart that it's not," he continued. "I know your parents are going to love you even more for being honest with them."

Some fans were taken aback by the request and said that it was inappropriate for her to ask him to do that, but Lya says she was happy that she did.

"aight lemme clear some stuff up.. I didn’t feel embarrassed about how shawn responded, if anything I was glad he had responded that way, it was refreshing to hear it from someone I look up to and who inspires me to be better, so to answer the question, was I mad, No," she wrote on Twitter.

She's even said that she's gotten a lot of support from other Shawn Mendes fans who have seen the video.
