“I think for me, a huge point that I want to touch on with the song is in the second verse, ‘I say I need to learn how to cope without you. I'm trying to protect myself, but only you know how to.’ And I think that's a huge one for me. And I think after the breakup happened, I realized how much of myself I was being protected by this person and that I needed to be able to protect that part of me too. And that's a huge moment, and I think that you don't really get to see those weak spots or those vulnerable spots that you need to care and love until they're open.”

The 23-year old's relationship with singer Camila Cabello ended in November 2021

after roughly three years together

“I think a lot of people have been excited about it, because it feels like something that they remember from me. And it feels like an essence that they get from me, but it also feels elevated. And then a lot of, a lot of people have just reached out telling me that they're going through the same thing or they've gone through the same thing. And that's always really nice to hear, you know?”

Mendes will begin an 86-arena tour in Portland in June
