Bluffton 2, Mount St. Joseph 1

BLUFFTON, Ohio — The Bluffton University men's soccer team netted a goal in each half en route to the 2-1 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021. Bluffton improved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the Heartland Conference, while the Lions slipped to 2-9 and 1-2 in the HCAC.

Both teams had plenty of chances in the opening period but the only score came when Elijah Zimmerman (Archbold) capitalized on an MSJ misfire in minute 32. His seventh tally of the season pushed Bluffton to a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Beavers made it a two-goal spread when Benjamin Davidson (Greenville) raced down the sideline in front of the Bluffton bench and found senior Jacob Kiger (Groveport/St. Charles Prep) in the middle of the field for his first goal of the 2021 fall campaign.

Freshman keeper Angel Velasco-Urbina (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) was busy between the pipes with eight saves on Wednesday afternoon. Kiger ripped a team-high four shots, while Zimmerman and JJ Meyer (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) finished with three apiece.

Bluffton piled up 21 shots, compared to 17 for the visitors. MSJ fired seven more corner kicks (9-2) with its final one resulting in the only Lion score at the 89:35 mark.

Volleyball

Bluffton 3, Manchester 2

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. — The Bluffton University volleyball team went the long way around, but the end result made it worth it as the Beavers downed Manchester in five sets on Wednesday. Bluffton improved to 9-12 overall and 1-1 in the Heartland Conference after trailing 2-0 at North Manchester.

The visitors were on life support after dropping the first two sets 25-16 and 25-19. A 25-21 victory in the third gave Bluffton hope and after a 27-25 overtime win in the fourth, the Beavers tied it. Bluffton rolled to a big lead in the clincher and capped off the night with a 15-11 margin to claim the match.

Freshman Chloei Barnett (Wapakoneta) lit up the Spartans with nine kills against just one error for a sterling .471 hitting percentage. Women's Soccer

ONU 1, Baldwin-Wallace 0

ADA — Playing in a light rain Wednesday night, the Ohio Northern women's soccer team appeared destined to go to overtime in a scoreless draw with Baldwin Wallace at Kerscher Stadium. But freshman Elizabeth Pierce (Liberty Township/Mount Notre Dame) had other ideas.

With just 1:32 remaining, Pierce got a shot past Baldwin Wallace goalkeeper Katie Scott for the game-winning score on an assist from sophomore Alaina Casey (Beavercreek/Carroll).

The win was the Polar Bears' second straight 1-0 conference victory, as they improved to 6-3-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Yellow Jackets to 5-7-0, 0-2-0.

A mostly rain-free first half saw ONU out-shoot BWU by a 4-0 margin.

The Polar Bears picked up their aggressiveness in the rainy second half, however, out-shooting Baldwin Wallace by a 12-3 margin.

That aggressiveness eventually paid off in the form of Pierce's goal.

Freshman Emma Bowman (Novi, Mich./Northville) attempted a game-high four shots for ONU to go with three each from Pierce and freshman Alexa Clampitt (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica).

Senior Kristy Catrine made two saves in the game in securing her seventh shutout of the season and 15th of her career.

Freshman Ella Barth attempted two of Baldwin Wallace's three shots in the game, and Scott tallied five saves for the Yellow Jackets.

ONU finished the game with a 16-3 edge in shot attempts and 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
