Shawnee Mission East, Olathe West finish atop Class 6A in Kansas boys golf championships
There was a bit of drama — and two tiebreakers needed — atop Class 6A as the final round of the Kansas state boys golf championships wrapped up on Tuesday. That extended to both the team and individual championships, as Shawnee Mission East’s Thomas Gogel (68-70—138) took home the individual state title in a playoff against Blue Valley’s Chance Rinkol.
As a team, Shawnee Mission East and Olathe West finished tied for first at 575 strokes, with Shawnee Mission East taking first due to the tiebreaker. According to the KSHSAA website, the first tiebreaker is the fifth golfer’s score from each team, followed by the sixth golfer if the score remains tied.
Jack Shelton (152) was fifth on Shawnee Mission East, finishing two strokes ahead of his Olathe West counterpart.
A duo from Olathe West, Nicklaus Nickloy and Bennett Warren, tied for fourth in Class 6A by shooting 140 apiece over the two-day event. Rounding out the top five were Rinkol (second place, 68-70—138) of Blue Valley and Parker Bennett (third, 70-69—139) of Blue Valley West.
Blue Valley Northwest, Blue Valley West and Olathe Northwest finished 3-4-5 in the team standings.
