Shaw's store shelves may go empty as delivery drivers go on strike

May 3—A labor dispute involving truck drivers and mechanics at Shaw's supermarkets in Maine and New England could lead to empty store shelves for local shoppers.

A representative of the Teamsters Local Union No. 340 in South Portland issued a statement early Monday saying the workers were going on strike as of 5:30 a.m.

He said the drivers and mechanics involved are responsible for keeping the store shelves stocked at Shaw's and Star Market locations throughout Maine and New England.

"The parties have met over 20 times since Oct. 2020 when the current contract expired," reads the statement, from Teamsters Business Agent Joe Piccone. "Since February 2021, the company has stated that they have a counter proposal but are unable to present it because they currently have no one with authority to negotiate available."

Shaw's and its parent company Albertsons Companies Inc. did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Monday.
