Sheboygan groups plan talk on domestic abuse, sex assault

SHEBOYGAN - Sheboygan Police Department, Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County and the Hmong Community Center are partnering to host a talk on domestic abuse and sexual assault.

The talk will be at 2 p.m. July 9 at the Hmong Community Center, 2304 Superior Ave. It will include presentations by Officer Kim Yang, Doua Lor from Safe Harbor and local therapist Ka Lee.

Chubby Bunny Boba food truck will be there selling bubble tea, deserts and Korean corndogs.

Portion of North Fifth Street/Highland Terrace in Sheboygan to close July 5-7

Construction on North Fifth Street/Highland Terrace from North Avenue to North Sixth Street in Sheboygan will begin July 5.

That portion of road will be closed to through traffic while work is being done.

The work is scheduled to be finished July 7.

Sustainable Sheboygan Task Force seeks input at July 10 open house

The Sustainable Sheboygan Task Force is inviting the community to an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 10 in the Roca Room of the Mead Public Library, 710 N. Eighth St., Sheboygan.

Those who attend the open house can share input on the development of a sustainability vision statement for the city.

A news release said the task force aims to create a roadmap for a greener and more resilient Sheboygan, addressing environmental, social and economic challenges.

The group’s vision statement will be recommended to the Sheboygan Common Council for approval. It will serve as a guiding framework for the city’s sustainability efforts and initiatives.

Once a vision statement is approved by the Common Council, an action plan will be developed to achieve the vision.

Emo Orchestra featuring Hawthorne Heights to play Sheboygan’s Weill Center

Emo Orchestra featuring Hawthorne Heights will perform at Sheboygan’s Weill Center for the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. Oct. 26.

Featuring special guests Hawthorne Heights, along with a full orchestra arrangement, Emo Orchestra will be embarking on its inaugural nationwide tour this fall, including the stop in Sheboygan.

In addition to playing their own songs, Hawthorne Heights will perform an array of emo hits.

Each night of the tour will feature a playbill for the performance that’s designed like a punk-rock zine; a VIP experience that includes a meet-and-greet with the conductor/arranger, Evan Rogers, and Hawthorne Heights; and a copy of the sheet music for Hawthorne Heights’ song “Ohio Is For Lovers,” signed by the band. A line of merch will also feature Emo Orchestra’s skull logo.

Sheboygan's Midsummer Festival of the Arts coming July 15-16

John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Midsummer Festival of the Arts is just around the corner, set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 15 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 16.

The event is at the Arts Center’s grounds, 608 New York Ave., Sheboygan, and City Green. Admission is free.

This is the 35th annual Midsummer Festival. Attendees can experience art in many forms.

Looking for a new piece of art? Purchase directly from the artist — 100 juried artist booths will showcase paintings, photographs, jewelry, wearables, wood carvings, ceramics, glass, leather goods, textiles and more.

Both days feature live music and street performances.

New this year, meet five emerging artists who will show their work.

In addition, three organizations serving adults with disabilities will be welcomed back this year after being part of the festival last year.

Watch artist demonstrations, contribute to a collaborative art-making project or make something to take with you at one of several art-making activity stations.

Taste the offerings from 15 local food and beverage vendors.

And venture inside the Arts Center for more artist engagements and activities; explore the contemporary art exhibitions including the latest, Patricia Piccinini: encounters of another plot; purchase unique gifts in the SHOP; and delight in the award-winning, artist-designed washrooms.

Road America brings Trans Am Series July 7-9

The prestigious Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli is set to make its way to Road America July 7-9.

Dating to its inception in 1966, the Trans Am Series has witnessed the rise of legendary names in motorsports. Champions such as Tommy Kendall, Mark Donohue, Peter Gregg, Bob Tullius and Wally Dallenbach Jr. have all etched their names in the annals of Trans Am history, amassing multiple championships.

The Trans Am Speed Tour at Road America will bring a diverse array of vehicles. Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers and Corvettes will roar through the course.

The races will be 100 miles long, with no mandatory pit stops for fueling, tires or driver changes.

The weekend will also feature a lineup of support races. The F1600 Championship Series, F2000 Championship Series, F1000 Championship Series, and the Atlantic Championship Series will all take center stage.

Additionally, the renowned International GT series, showcasing the prowess of late-model Porsche and Ferrari competitors, will further elevate the competition.

Howards Grove student takes second in national skills competition

Gabe Schmidt competed in the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in Atlanta earlier in June.

To qualify for nationals, he had to finish in first place in Wisconsin at the state competition in April.

The national competition had students from all 50 states and four territories, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Schmidt competed in the Marine Service contest, which includes servicing outboard and inboard marine engines, and he earned the silver medal for his second-place finish.

Schmidt will be a senior next school year. His adviser is Josef Janicek, who is a technology education teacher for Howards Grove Schools.
