Kiel Municipal Band readies for annual Patriotic Concert

Kiel Municipal Band, under the direction of Jon Meyer, will present its annual Patriotic Concert at City Park at 7 p.m. June 28.

The concert is a tradition in the area, with special music for Independence Day and a salute to veterans.

The concert is presented in the style of the “March King,” John Philip Sousa. Sousa often began his concerts with an overture. The band will perform a new piece in overture style by Kansas composer Robert Foster.

“American Variants” is a set of free variations based on the melody “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” It was commissioned by students and alumni of Lakeland University to honor the retirement of Dr. Lewis Schmidt, professor of music (and former conductor of the Kiel Municipal Band).

Marches such as “Golden Jubilee,” “Washington Post” and the national march “Stars and Stripes Forever,” all composed by Sousa, will contribute to the Fourth of July theme of the concert.

The KMB will also perform a piece composed by Ferde Grofé just prior to World War II, “Ode to Freedom,” based on the song “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

The vocal soloist at the concert is Courtney Eberle, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She has been a member of the Kiel Municipal Band trumpet section for nine years. A 2019 alumna of Kiel High School, she has been an active member of the area arts community. Her featured solo will be “Cole Porter Songs,” an arrangement by Robert Russell Bennett. Songs in the medley include “In the Still of the Night,” “My Heart Belongs to Daddy,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “It’s De-Lovely.” She will also sing Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America,” George M. Cohan’s “Star-Spangled Spectacular,” a collection of Cohan’s best-loved tunes, as well as Carmen Dragon’s setting of “America, the Beautiful.”

The concert will conclude with “Armed Forces Salute,” a tribute to veterans both in the audience and everywhere in the world.

Prior to the concert, starting at 4 p.m. and continuing until 7:30 p.m., St. Peter’s United Church of Christ will be hosting a Picnic in the Park.
