Sheboygan’s Kohler-Andrae State Park brings bird walk, wildflowers, Shakespeare in the Park

SHEBOYGAN - Kohler-Andrae State Park has a busy week of events planned, capped by a visit from Summit Players Theatre and its performance of "Macbeth."

Here's a look at everything that's planned at the park, which is at 1020 Beach Park Lane, Sheboygan. For more details, call 920-451-4080.

  • Discovery Bird Walk: July 11, 8-10 a.m., join master naturalists Janet and Andy Raddatz at Friends Pond for a guided walk east on Old Park Road, back to the pond and on to the Ancient Shores Trail in search of birds. For ages 12 and older. Meet at the Friends Pond parking lot, P9.

  • Discovery Wildflowers: July 12, 1:30-2:30 p.m., join Master Naturalist Karen Merlau and discover the many wildflowers growing along the Black River Trail. Meet at the Black River Trail parking lot, P1.

  • Trees are Superheroes: July 13, 10-11 a.m., join Master Naturalist Judy Salus and learn how trees help us every day with games, songs, stories and more. Meet at the Woodland Dunes Trailhead near parking lot P8.

  • Ink Fish Printing: July 15, 10-11 a.m., everyone’s welcome to try the ancient art of “Gyotaku” (guy-yo-tah-koo) or ink fish printing. All ages are welcome. Meet at the Park Bathhouse near parking lot P6.

  • Kohler Dunes Natural Area Discovery Hike: July 15, 1-2 p.m., join Master Naturalist Jim Buchholz and Butch Dumez for a hike along the Kohler Dunes Cordwalk to discover what can be found in this special setting. This is a family-friendly hike, but no pets are allowed. Meet at the entrance to the Sanderling Nature Center, parking lot 3.

  • Shakespeare in the Park workshop: July 15, 5:30 p.m., the Summit Players Theatre presents its 2023 season, Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” Enjoy a pre-show workshop to get familiar with the storyline and try out your performance skills. This is a great opportunity for kids and adults to learn about Shakespeare through games and dramatic play. Meet at the Amphitheater near parking lot P4.

  • Shakespeare in the Park performance: July 15, 7 p.m., the Summit Players Theatre presents a brand-new production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” All shows and workshops are presented free of charge. Seating at the Amphitheater is on a first-come, first-served basis. Wisconsin State Park Admission is required and can be purchased upon entry to the park. Meet at the Amphitheater near parking lot P4.

Maywood invites community to 40th anniversary summer celebration

Maywood, 3615 Mueller Road, invites the community to celebrate its 40th anniversary July 29. The free open-house event will feature family-friendly activities that highlight the park and its history. The event will run 1-4 p.m.

Several nature activity stations will be offered, including a fishing game, animal tracking exploration station, nature coloring station, self-guided nature bingo, bubbles and temporary nature tattoos.

Throughout the event, guests can have ice cream sundaes courtesy of Culver’s and snow cones with Maywood’s maple syrup. Live music will be provided by Dan Ognavic.

Former Park Director Dave Kuckuk will lead “Discover the Secret Wonders of Maywood” hikes at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Guests will travel to three locations in the park to discover lesser-known park features.

Admission is free, but donations to support Maywood are appreciated. Those registering by July 27 will be entered in a drawing to win Maywood-themed prizes. Maywood is open 4 a.m.-11 p.m. daily and admission is free. The ecology center is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays and for programs and special events.

Maywood was founded in 1983 on a land donation made by Ellwood and Mary May. The original park was 120 acres and over the years an additional 15 acres was added. Maywood’s six unique habitats were restored or installed during the 1980s and include a demonstration prairie, pine forest, mixed hardwood/maple forest, ponds, wetlands and the Pigeon River. Additional features of the park include an ecology center, hiking and walking trails, interpretive signage, a hummingbird garden, an arboretum and a rain garden.

Aviation Heritage Center to screen ‘The War Lover’

The Aviation Heritage Center of Wisconsin at Sheboygan County Memorial Airport, N6191 Resource Drive, Sheboygan Falls, will screen the 1962 movie “The War Lover,” starring Steve McQueen, on July 14.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the screening will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $2 and popcorn and soft drinks will be available.

A description of the movie states: “Stationed in England during World War II, Buzz Rickson (McQueen) is the bravest Air Force pilot in his squadron and the most reckless. His quest for thrills takes him to the brink of destruction during the B-17 bombing raids on Germany. But while Buzz’s daredevil heroics win the grudging respect of his crew, his rebellious attitude alienates everyone, except his co-pilot, Ed Bolland (Robert Wagner). Ultimately, Buzz destroys even this relationship by pursuing Ed’s girlfriend.”

Sheboygan police Bike Rodeo set for July 29

Sheboygan Police Department will hold its Bike Rodeo from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. July 29 in the parking lot at St. Peter Claver Church, 1444 S. 11th St., Sheboygan. Admission is free. People can stop in any time during the event.

The event is for kids ages 3-14 and their family. Topics will include hand signals, traffic sign and intersection awareness, bicycle maintenance, bicycle safety, safe ways of riding, rules of the road and sidewalk, and take-home handouts.

People attending are asked to take their own bike, although a limited number will be available at the event.

Average time for completing helmet-fitting, inspection and the education course is 30 minutes, a flier said.

Riders must be able to ride without assistance and training wheels are welcome.

All participants must wear a bicycle helmet. Free helmets will be given to those who don’t have them, while supplies last.

Wade House brings Carriage Driving Day

Wade House, a Wisconsin Historical Society site at W7965 State 23 in Greenbush, will welcome guests for a special carriage-driving event July 29.

Wade House Carriage Driving Day offers spectators a chance to marvel at an array of antique, reproduced and modern carriages pulled by horses of all shapes and sizes as they compete in the brand-new arena across three categories designed to test the skills of the drivers and the athleticism of the horses: Dressage, the Cones Course and a Cross Country Drive.

Guests can take a horse-drawn wagon ride from the Visitor Center to the new arena, where they can watch the action up close, taking in the excitement as impeccably dressed drivers show off their skills and compete for a coveted blue ribbon.

Display carriages will be open for guests to explore as well as the Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, which features Wisconsin’s largest collection of carriages and wagons.

Wade House Carriage Driving Day will be held rain or shine and takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Concessions will be available for purchase. Tickets are $17 for adults and teens, $15 for seniors, $8.50 for children ages 5-12, and admission is free for children younger than 5.
