Sheboygan letter-writers on circus animals, Elevate run, and Republicans and women’s health

Here are this week’s letters to the editor of the Sheboygan Press. See our letters policy below for details about how to share your views.

Animals in circuses are not appealing

Animals in circuses are not as appealing as many would visualize. The backstage is filled with lifelong captivity and tears that goes ignored during the showbiz.

Many countries have already banned the use of any kind of animals after reports of mistreatment, malnutrition, lack of veterinary care and, eventually, early death for these animals.

The life of solidarity in small enclosures and without the access to their natural habitat could lead to detrimental effects to their mental and physical health. If not handled properly, the animal could show sudden aggressiveness, leading to serious injury and possible death of the animal handler/trainer.

Furthermore, when children are taken to a circus that exhibits animal shows, we normalize the use of animals for human entertainment against their will, which is invariably unethical and I do not think is a great idea to educate the young minds about animal captivity.

As an ardent animal lover who sympathizes with all the circus animals, could I request the concerned authority of Sheboygan County to host a circus that has no animals in it? I am sure a circus could be more appealing without the hidden tears of the voiceless.

Elevate thanks supporters of Under the Influence of Adrenaline Race

Elevate recently hosted our 13th annual Under the Influence of Adrenaline Race including a full (Boston qualifier) and half marathon,10K and 5K run.

524 participants registered to run on the Eisenbahn Trail. This year, we also partnered with NAMI Washington County by providing a fundraiser inside a fundraiser to benefit their programs.

The money raised helps Elevate achieve our mission and support programs such as the Peers 4 Peers program, Drug Treatment Court and Calm Harbor.

More than $40,000 was generated and we are so grateful for everyone’s help.

Thank you to Washington and Fond du Lac counties for opening your beautiful trail to our event. Thank you also to Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin and LifeStar for being there should medical support be needed.

Thank you to West Bend Insurance; Westbury Bank; Kettlebrook Church; Delta Defense; RW Baird; Summit Credit Union; West Bend Kiwanis Foundation; T-4 Insurance; Granite Hills Hospital; Washington County Dairy Promotion; Kieckhafer, Dietzler, Hauser, Hanson LLC; Group Health Associates; and Gilman Precision, USA, for financial sponsorships.

Also, thank you to Meijer, Engelhardt Dairy and Property Loss Management for in-kind support.

Finally, a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers who cheered on the runners and helped them stay hydrated and safe. This includes the West Bend Police Department, NAMI Washington County, West Bend West girls’ cross country team, youth from the Peers 4 Peers programs, and Elevate board and Staff.

Republicans want to outlaw a woman's right to choose

Republicans are going out of their way to prevent women from getting any kind of birth control procedure or medication.

The Republicans want to make it a crime if a woman takes the morning-after pill. Or gets birth control pills from her doctor. They want a woman’s right to choose outlawed.

Yet, I have not seen or heard of any Republicans talking about outlawing men from getting a vasectomy or outlawing prophylactics. Yet, for some reason Republicans are only interested in taking away a women’s right to birth control.

If I didn’t know better, I would be under the impression that Republicans consider women second-class citizens.
