SHEBOYGAN — The Common Council authorized Feb. 19 the purchase of an Aurora Medical Group, Inc. property for $1.4 million.

The city is proposing to turn the property at 1211 N. 23rd St. into a fire station, according to an offer to purchase agreement. It would be Sheboygan Fire Department’s new headquarters, which has been housed on 25th Street for more than 50 years.

The property, formerly owned by the Sheboygan County Highway Department, is still under Aurora ownership, according to property records. An Aurora Health Care spokesperson said discussions about the sale are ongoing with the city.

If the sale is finalized, Fire Chief Eric Montellano said the new, modernized headquarters could offer ADA compliance, an onsite training facility and a dry room for gear. It could also have an Emergency Operation Center, more storage space, and bathroom and shower facilities for men and women staff.

SFD would no longer use the North 25th Street headquarters, Montellano said, and it would turn over to the city.

An Aurora spokesperson didn’t have more details about the medical group’s previous intentions for the North 23rd Street site.
