SHEBOYGAN - Habitat for Humanity Lakeside is focusing its annual Rock the Block event in the Gateway Neighborhood in Sheboygan Sept. 22, 24 and 25.

Rock the Block is a revitalization program typically held in September that offers residents a chance to partner with HFHL for affordable home repairs.

Each year, HFHL selects one Sheboygan neighborhood burdened by housing repairs — such as fixing unstable porches, broken storm doors and overgrown yards. More than 100 volunteers then gather to complete exterior home repairs for neighbors in need during the three-day event.

“The energy and enthusiasm from the large number of volunteers is contagious, and the results are so satisfying," said Niki Zohrab, HFHL executive director, in a news release. "In partnership with the City of Sheboygan, Sheboygan Fire Department, the Sheboygan Police Department and the IBEW Local 494, Habitat and the volunteers complete amazing things over the course of only three days.”

To reserve a spot as a Rock the Block volunteer between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sept. 24 or noon and 4 p.m. Sept. 25, email lpuls@habitatlakeside.com.

► Residents invited to flood map open house: Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives will host a Virtual Flood Risk Open House Oct. 4 for communities in the Milwaukee River Watershed and Lake Michigan coastal region of Sheboygan County.

According to a news release, the open house will give residents the chance to review preliminary versions of a recently completed Flood Insurance Study report and its accompanying preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map for the Milwaukee River Watershed and Lake Michigan coastal areas.

The FIS and the FIRMs provide base flood (also known as the 1% annual chance event) information, designate areas that are subject to significant flood hazards within the county and offer information that public officials may use when permitting development in the floodplain.

At the open house, representatives from various local, state and federal agencies will be available to provide the most current information about flood risk, flood insurance, floodplain development regulations and the process used to map Sheboygan County’s floodplains. The newly prepared preliminary maps can also be reviewed.

Once the maps become effective, they will be used as the basis for flood insurance rates and for local floodplain management ordinances adopted under the National Flood Insurance Program.

FEMA also encourages public officials to use the effective maps as tools to assist planning processes and outreach efforts for better resiliency in response to flood and storm events.

Details for the Sheboygan County meeting are as follow: 4-7 p.m. Oct. 4 via Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83734096539?pwd=b1FRQWY5WTZsVWVYU09VczBwcE94UT09). Meeting ID is 837 3409 6539.

Digital files of the preliminary FIRM and FIS report can be downloaded from www.fema.gov/preliminaryfloodhazarddata or viewed via the Map Service Center Preliminary Map Change viewer at https://msc.fema.gov/fmcv.
