The event is more than just a fundraising walk/run that is expected to raise more than $150,000 for the American Cancer Society — it’s also an opportunity to celebrate and remember those lives touched by cancer.

Tribute flags are made available the day of the event for a donation and are placed near the finish line. Survivors are invited to stop by the survivor area to sign a banner honoring their journey, receive a survivor shirt and gather for a photo prior to the start of the race.

Each year, a member of the community is celebrated as an honorary survivor. This year, the event will honor and celebrate Bob Lindorfer during its opening ceremony.

Funds raised through this event, which is presented by Road America, support the mission of the American Cancer Society. More info: hittheroadrun.org.

Drug Take Back Day drive set for Oct. 29: In conjunction with National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital is partnering with Healthy Sheboygan County and Sheboygan Police Department to offer drive-thru medication drop-off locations on Saturday.

The drop-offs will be open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the following locations:

  • HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, 3100 Superior Ave., Sheboygan;

  • Sheboygan Falls Police Department, 375 Buffalo St., Sheboygan Falls;

  • Random Lake Fire Department, 718 Spring St., Random Lake; and

  • Generations, 1500 Douglas Drive, Plymouth.

All waste pharmaceuticals must be generated by a household — no businesses are allowed.

All sites will be drive-thru only and people should stay in their vehicles as volunteers collect items.

People can take prescriptions, both controlled and non-controlled, and over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, inhalers, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vials and pet medications. Vape pens or other e-cigarette devices, with batteries removed, will also be accepted.

Items not accepted will include illegal drugs, needles/sharps, acids, aerosol cans, bio-hazardous materials (anything containing a bodily fluid or blood), personal care products (shampoo, soaps, lotions, sunscreens), household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, oil, gas) and mercury thermometers.

Participants may dispose of medications by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into a disposal box or into a clear, sealable plastic bag. Plastic pill containers will not be collected. Blister packages without the medications being removed are acceptable.

Liquids will be accepted. However, the liquids, creams and sprays must be in their original packaging and their weight evenly distributed within the boxes of collected solid prescription medications. Liquids without the original packaging will not be accepted.

Community members are also reminded that many drug disposal boxes are open year-round.

Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain as water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all pharmaceuticals and trace amounts are showing up in rivers and lakes.
