Sheboygan traffic alert: Work on Geele Avenue has started. What to know about closures and detours.

SHEBOYGAN - Work on Geele Avenue between North Taylor Drive and North 38th Street in Sheboygan started today (May 2).

Portions of the road will be closed to through traffic at various times throughout the project.

The first closure started Monday and is expected to last one day. A detour is posted using North Taylor Drive, Saemann Avenue and North 38th Street.

Placement of the new asphalt pavement will require a future road closure and the date for that has yet to be set, the city said.

The work on Geele Avenue is scheduled to be completed in July. It includes a mill and overlay with removal of existing asphalt pavement and replacement with new asphalt pavement. The work and traffic impacts are dependent on weather.

Another project for Geele Avenue, from North 29th Street to North Taylor Drive, is expected to be done in 2023 or 2024 after proposed improvements to the storm water pond at the intersection of Geele Avenue and North 29th Street are completed.

Grant will help Historical Society tell stories of underrepresented groups: Sheboygan County Historical Society has received a $25,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Telling the Full History Preservation Fund, which focuses on projects that help preserve, interpret and activate historic places to tell the stories of underrepresented groups.

“Sheboygan County: Telling the Full History” was one of 80 projects nationwide selected for funding out of 446 grant applications received by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Sheboygan County Historical Society will partner with Green Bicycle Co. on the project. Green Bicycle Co. will enlist and lead a project task force composed of representatives from women, LGBTQIA+ and Hmong communities in Sheboygan County. Those members will meet regularly and determine the best strategies for dialogue with their communities, as well as promote this project to their organizations, businesses and networks, the society said.

The project's goal is to develop a better understanding of the role underrepresented communities played in the history and evolution of the county.

“In this project, we will be engaging with specific communities to collect and archive information and create opportunities for engagement and exhibition,” the society said. “The project will include educational workshops that weave into the project including storytelling or exhibiting to help communities tell their stories into the future.”

Partnerships will also be made with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan County LGBTQ Alliance and other organizations to host exhibits and conversations, archive data and attend workshops.
