Sheboygan's new state-of-the-art animal shelter opens to the public Friday. Here's what to know about the facility.

SHEBOYGAN - The all-new, state-of-the-art Humane Society of Sheboygan County Carol Hollfelder Animal Shelter will open to the public Friday after a ribbon-cutting earlier this week.

The facility, at 3209 N. 21st St. in Sheboygan, includes a retail store, enhanced and expanded animal spaces, a full surgical suite for spay and neuter services and for medical and surgical needs of shelter pets, and a community room.

In late summer, a 3.5-acre dog park that will be available to the public will also open at the site.

The new facility is near the previous shelter, which was built in 1964 and had “outgrown its efficiency,” HSSC said in a news release. The old shelter was too small to handle the 3,000 animals that came through HSSC's doors annually. In 2021, HSSC served more than 4,320 pets in the surrounding communities.

The HSSC is the county’s only open admissions, no-kill animal shelter, and the nonprofit is not supported by any local or state tax dollars.

To fund the new facility, the HSSC completed a $4 million capital campaign, its first since 1964. In 2020, Bea and Tom Hollfelder donated $1 million on behalf of their daughter, Carol Hollfelder, and the facility was named in her honor.

Ground was broken on the project in 2019, but then a series of delays caused by the pandemic led to the building being completed this spring.
