Sheehan, McDougal star as Bolton softball rallies again

May 18—The Bolton High softball team has had a knack for late heroics in the last week and that trend continued Tuesday.

Caleigh Sheehan's single scored Breelin McDougal with the lead run in the top of the seventh inning and the visiting Bulldogs went on to defeat Suffield 5-2 in an NCCC game.

Bolton (9-8) has won a season-high four in a row with three decided in its last at-bat. The stretch started a week ago when it beat Suffield in 10 innings.

Sheehan gave the Bulldogs a third-inning lead when her single brought home McDougal. Suffield (2-14) went up 2-1 in the fourth as Lauren Sheridan singled and freshman Lizzy Jamrog rocked a two-run homer. Lucy Doyle's RBI single tied it for Bolton in the fifth.

Then in the seventh, McDougal tripled and scored on Sheehan's bloop single. Samantha Sondik added a two-run single to account for the final score.

McDougal, who had three hits, pitched a three-hitter and struck out 16. Hayli Graham fanned eight in a losing effort for the Wildcats.

Bolton hosts the East Windsor/SMSA co-op today while Suffield visits Windsor Locks.

COVENTRY 10, WINDSOR LOCKS 2. Lily Rand had a two-run homer as host Coventry coasted to an NCCC win.

Charlotte Wesoloskie had two hits for the Patriots (14-3). Sydney DeLuca and Caroline Wesoloskie drove in two runs each. Winning pitcher Elizabeth Mitchell allowed three hits and struck out 10. Angelina Jones smacked a two-run homer for Windsor Locks. (5-11).

Coventry entertains Rockville Thursday. Windsor Locks hosts Suffield today.

ENFIELD 15, EAST HARTFORD 4. Taylor Lathrop went 4-for-4 to pace an 18-hit attack as host Enfield rolled to a CCC East win.

The win for the Eagles (13-4, 6-0 CCC East) sets up a showdown Thursday at Brainard Park in Enfield with RHAM that will decide the division championship. The Raptors are also 6-0 in CCC East play.

Meredith Higgins, Payten Stebbins, Gina Buvelot, Brenna Lyver, and Cassidy Wallner had two hits each for Enfield. Lathrop, Lyver, Wallner, Sophia Verrengia, Savannah Holmes, and Samantha Dubiel drove in two runs apiece. Tiffany Lubanski was the winning pitcher with four innings of no-hit, no-run ball. She struck out 10.

Lenaiya Garcia had a two-run double for East Hartford (3-14, 0-6).

Both teams play today. East Hartford hosts Tolland while Enfield visits Windsor.

GLASTONBURY 2, ELLINGTON 0. Brooke Tracy fired a four-hitter as Glastonbury ended visiting Ellington's 15-game winning streak in non-league action.

The Guardians (16-2) have won seven in a row and are the top team in the also receiving votes category of the New Haven Register/GameTimeCT poll. The Knights (15-2) are also receiving votes.

Tracy walked one and struck out nine to outduel Ellington's Camryn Fisher. The freshman allowed four hits. She walked two and fanned 14.

Glastonbury's offense came in the fourth inning as Tracy and Sadie Scurto connected on back-to-back home runs. Scurto would add a double and Tracy a single.

Katherine Czyz, Brynlee Eckels, Shannon Gaer, and Erin Fitzgerald had hits for the Knights. Bryanna Cromwell was a defensive standout.

Glastonbury is at Manchester today. Ellington visits Granby today with a chance to clinch a share of the NCCC championship.

SOUTHINGTON 10, RHAM 2. Ashlyn Desaulniers had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in two as No. 4 Southington rolled to a CCC interdivisional win.

The Blue Knights (16-1) took the lead for good with a four-run second inning. RHAM (14-3) committed eight errors in having its eight-game winning streak snapped.

Natalie Assunto had two hits for the Raptors, who visit Middletown today.

MANCHESTER 10, BRISTOL EASTERN 7. Lexie Rose hit a three-run double during Manchester's eight-run seventh inning as the Red Hawks rallied for a CCC interdivisional win in Bristol.

Manchester (9-9) trailed 3-2 entering the seventh, Cat Smith set the tone for the frame with a leadoff single.

Vicky Resto scored three runs for the Red Hawks. Kate Regan survived Bristol Eastern's four-run bottom of the seventh for the complete-game win. She struck out three. Janessa Gonzalez homered for the Lancers (10-8).

Manchester entertains Glastonbury today.

STAFFORD 16, WESTBROOK/PORT. 1. Gabby Hubbard went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in host Stafford's five-inning non-league win.

The Bulldogs (9-8) broke a 1-1 tie with 14 runs in the third inning that included a Sofia Frassinelli grand slam. Frassinelli finished with two hits and five RBIs. Ashley Toney had two hits with a home run. Frassinelli was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and striking out nine.

Stafford is at Ellington Thursday.
